Author Peter Flax will share his insights into the creation and production of Live to Ride: Finding Joy and Meaning on a Bicycle, his 2024 book which explores the unifying dynamics of bicycle culture.

The book argues that everyone who rides—whether they commute, enjoy nature, or race—has more in common than they might realize. Part of the discussion will focus on a section contextualizing the significance of groundbreaking bike lanes constructed decades ago in Davis—and how Flax was aided by photography and documents from our Archives and Special Collections Department.

This talk is free and open to all. Please register in advance to reserve your spot.

About the Speaker
Peter Flax is a Los Angeles-based writer and editor who frequently writes about cycling. He is the former editor in chief of Bicycling magazine and was editorial director at Red Bull Media house. His work has been published by dozens of magazines, including Outside, Time, Alta Journal, Men’s Health, and Runner’s World. Live to Ride was his first book. Flax has lived in Los Angeles for 13 years without a car, doing roughly 100,000 miles of bike commuting in that timeframe.

The formation of the Davis Farmers Market 50 years ago was a revolutionary movement to connect consumers directly to farmers and helped shape the fresh flavors of California cuisine. Markets have been a cornerstone of the community and have also played a pivotal role in food access, especially during supply chain shortages and widespread food recalls. Inevitably, markets have evolved. Join us as we explore the history, impact and changing role of farmers markets in local communities.

The event will feature a panel of leading industry experts including:

Ann Evans, UC Davis alumna, co-founder of the Davis Farmers Market and Davis Food Co-op, author and former mayor and city council member of the City of DavisSam Greenlee, chief executive officer of Alchemist Community Development CorporationChutharat Sae Tong, co-owner of Majka Pizzeria and Bakery in SacramentoModerator Catherine Brinkley, associate professor in Human Ecology, Community and Regional Development at UC Davis

A pop-up exhibit from the library's Archives and Special Collections will be on display.

The event includes a welcome reception, a hosted bar and appetizers. Tickets are $25/person ($15/students).

The Savor lecture series is a collaboration between the Robert Mondavi Institute for Wine and Food Science and the UC Davis Library.
