You need more compute power!

This 2-day intensive workshop provides an introduction to accessing and computing on remote servers such as UC Davis’ HPC (high performance cluster) to elevate your research.

The series covers everything you need to know to get started. We’ll provide an overview of HPC terminology, architecture, and general workflows, and guide learners through how to set up and use SSH to log in and transfer files, how to install software with miniconda, how to reserve computing time and run programs with SLURM, and execute shell commands that are especially useful for working with servers. As we learn we’ll practice accessing and computing on remote servers using the UC Davis HPC Core Facility’s new “Hive” cluster.

The material builds and thus learners must attend both days. Sessions run from 10 AM - 4 PM each day, with a break for lunch.

After this workshop series, learners should be able to:

Use SSH to log in to a server;Transfer files to and from a server;Set up and use conda/mamba to install software on a server;Use SLURM to run interactive and non-interactive software on a server;Explain etiquette for using a server cluster such as Hive.
This workshop is subject to cancellation if minimum enrollment is not achieved.

PREREQUISITES

Participants should have taken DataLab’s “Introduction to the Unix Command Line” workshop, or have equivalent prior experience using command line. Specifically, you will need to know how to use command line to navigate your file system and inspect, create, edit and move files. Participants must be comfortable with programming in a language such as R or Python, and with basic Linux shell syntax (i.e., able to navigate and create, modify and move files via command line).

Learners will register for a HPC account during the session. CAS authentication is required.

Can't make it to this training? Check out our workshop schedule. Materials from prior workshops are available on DataLab's website.

The landscape of the academic and professional world is shifting. Whether you are an aspiring historian, a budding chemist, or a future sociologist, AI is no longer a "tech" skill—it’s a foundational literacy.

Developed through a collaboration between the UC Davis College of Letters & Science and DataLab, this 1-unit intensive course is designed to unveil Artificial Intelligence. We’ve stripped away the dense math and complex coding to give you a conceptual, high-level understanding of how artificial intelligence systems work, why they matter, and how to make them work for you.

Why Enroll?

In a single day, you will move from being a passive AI user to a critical, strategic collaborator. This training is specifically curated for L&S students to ensure you graduate with the competitive edge needed for the rapidly evolving, AI-driven workplace.

No technical background? No problem. This course has no prerequisites. It is designed for thinkers, writers, and researchers across all liberal arts and science disciplines.

The curriculum is divided into four deep-dive modules:

How AI Thinks
Understand the "brain" of the machine. We’ll explore the theories of language and cognition that allow Large Language Models (LLMs) to function, and provide a framework for evaluating their potential and limits.

How to Use AI Responsibly
AI isn't a magic wand—it’s a tool with a history and consequences. We discuss the environmental and societal impacts, how to ensure the veracity of AI results, and why reproducibility is the cornerstone of ethical tech.

How to Talk with AI
Master the art and science of prompt engineering. Learn what happens behind the scenes when you send a prompt. Develop sophisticated strategies to get the exact results you need.

Module 4: How AI Talks with You
A look at the future of AI implementation. From simple chatbots to complex autonomous "Agents," learn how AI is being embedded into systems and how to evaluate its activity.

By the end of this one-day course, you will be able to:

Define "AI" and distinguish it from traditional statistics and data science.

Identify whether a real-world problem is suitable for an AI solution.

Develop advanced prompting strategies that produce reliable, useful results.

Critically interrogate your own engagement with AI and its impact on our society and environment.

Apply Now

This intensive, one-day course will be offered five times during Spring Quarter 2026. You only need to signup for one date.

Time: 9:00 AM – 4:30 PM (with a break for lunch)

Credits: 1 Unit

CRN & location: Will be emailed to accepted and confirmed registrants.

Eligibility: Open to all students with a major in the College of Letters & Science.

Priority: Registration priority is given to Seniors (4th years) and students graduating in Spring or Summer 2026. Other students in the College of Letters and Science are encouraged to register and will be admitted as space permits.

Materson and Corrie Decker at Manetti Shrem Museum

Join us for an evening with UC Davis faculty authors Lisa G. Materson and Corrie Decker as part of Covered, a monthly event series celebrating recent books from the College of Letters and Science.

Lisa G. Materson, associate professor of history, traces civil rights activist Ruth Reynolds’ deep involvement in the movement for Puerto Rico’s independence in Radical Solidarity, offering a nuanced account of political allyship, anti-colonial struggle and cross-racial collaboration.
Corrie Decker, associate professor of history, examines how colonial courts and ethnographers in 20th century East Africa transformed complex rites of passage into simplified “puberty rites" in The Age of Sex: Custom, Law, and Ritual in Twentieth-Century East Africa, reshaping legal understandings of childhood, adulthood, gender and sexual maturity.

Covered: Spotlighting Faculty Authors in Letters and Science is co-sponsored by the Jan Shrem and Maria Manetti Shrem Museum and the UC Davis Library.
